Alexey Novikov has been Dean of the Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning at HSE since January this year. A PhD in Geography, he was head of Standard & Poor in Moscow and Thomson Reuters, and took over from the first dean of the school, the late Alexander Vysokovsky. Alexey Novikov talked to HSE News Service Editor in Chief Natalia Kogynina about what will become of the school of Urban Studies now, how to resolve urban planning conflicts and why urban planners are like lawyers.

HSE students Olga Talovskaya, Aleksandr Ryzhkov, Nadezhda Hort, Alevtina Baynakova  (2013 selection) made a plan for the urban development of Bishkek (the capital of Kirghizia) in 2040. The project was a public competition entry to redesign the city for the 50th anniversary of Kirghiz independence.

Valentin Bogorov, graduate of the MSU Faculty of Geography delivered a lecture about Yi-Fu Tuan – the well-known geographer, who worked with Bogorov at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA. The lecture took place at the Dostoevsky Library (38 Chistoprudny Bulevard) on February 4 as part of a series of open lectures offered by the Graduate School of Urban Studies.

Russia’s urban residents can be split into four groups, depending on their relationship with the city, what they expect from it, values, and lifestyle. Three groups prefer to lead a settled or sedentary lifestyle, as they are either content with their place of residence, or passive. The fourth category is mobile, and always ready to move. By taking each group’s values into account, cities can be made more comfortable for all residents, research by a study group at the HSE’s Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning says.

On December 22, 2014, Alexander Vysokovsky, Dean of the HSE Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning, died unexpectedly, aged 66.

On November 11, the HSE hosted an open lecture by Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia. He talked about the upcoming international exhibition Expo 2015, which will take place in Milan from May-October next year, and about the transformations underway in Milan as an urban environment. He extended an invitation to HSE to take part in Expo Milano 2015, saying that Milan was 'ready to offer a forum for interesting projects' proposed by leading universities.

The HSE Institute of Regional Studies and Urban Planning held a panel discussion entitled ‘Developing Cities and Infrastructure’ as part of the Russian-Japanese forum ‘Points of Intersection: Business, Technology, Culture’ that took place in Moscow. The discussion focused on development opportunities in Moscow and the adoption of solutions to urban problems already applied in Tokyo.

The Graduate School of Urban Studies is launching an international peer-reviewed journal ‘Urban Studies in Russia’. We are currently preparing the first issue of the journal and we invite authors to submit work and cooperate with us. The journal will cover scientific articles dedicated to research into different processes on urban spatial structure, urban planning, and methods of urban studies.
